The Greek-Israeli defense and industrial cooperation achieved a new milestone with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and the Hellenic Aerospace Industry (EAB) during the May 6-8 Defense Exhibition Expo of Athens (DEFEA).
The agreement concerns “BlueWhale,” an autonomous underwater system developed by Israel. The system, offered to the Hellenic Navy, is capable of carrying out a range of covert maritime missions, including over-the-surface intelligence gathering, submarine and underwater target detection, acoustic intelligence collection, and seabed minefield detection.
As per the deal, Greece will play a key role in the production and technological advancement of the BlueWhale platform.
Besides its contribution to the project, Hellenic Aerospace will also benefit from direct access to Israeli defense technology — considered among the most advanced globally.
The agreement between the Greek and Israeli defense industries includes opportunities for technology transfer between the two countries and active involvement in future joint projects.
The “BlueWhale” is an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV), measuring 10.9 meters in length, with a diameter of 1.12 meters and a total weight of 5.5 tons.
The cooperation highlights Greece’s ambition to enhance its indigenous defense manufacturing capabilities while solidifying its security alliance with Israel in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
