Frenzied demand greeted the release of former Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ new book, Ithaca, which sold more than 30,000 copies within hours and quickly went out of stock, the publisher Gutenberg announced on Monday.
Within just five hours of release, around 80% of the initial stock had been sold across bookstores nationwide, with shelves nearly empty by midday. In response, Gutenberg has already launched five reprints, each of approximately 4,000 copies, to meet the unprecedented demand.
The book’s audiobook edition also recorded impressive sales, with estimates suggesting around 400 copies sold per hour during its first ten hours of availability.
Gutenberg expressed gratitude to readers for their overwhelming support and announced that reprinting efforts are underway to ensure continuous availability across the country. The publisher noted that, despite best efforts, minor delays of one to two days in some locations could occur due to the extraordinary demand.
“This is a historic response from the reading public,” the publisher said in a statement, thanking readers for their trust and enthusiasm for Ithaca.
