Greek lawmaker Dora Bakoyannis, a former foreign minister and Athens mayor, on Thursday again “revealed” that tennis start Maria Sakkari will marry her nephew, Konstantinos Mitsotakis, next year on Crete.
Speaking on a Mega Channel morning program, Bakoyannis referred to a joyful development for the entire Mitsotakis family. Konstantinos is the son of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Dora Bakoyannis’ younger brother, and grandson of the late prime minister Konstantinos Mitsotakis.
The development has more-or-less been an “open secret” for the past few months.
Speaking on the program Buongiorno, Bakoyannis said a wedding is planned for 2027. She noted that family weddings have traditionally been held in the port city of Chania, the native region of the Mitsotakis clan, while calling the couple “a very beautiful match.”
Bakoyannis also reflected on her own experience, saying that second marriages often involve a more personal choice and with fewer social obligations, allowing couples to celebrate with close friends and loved ones.
Sakkari, one of Greece’s most prominent athletes and with a consistent presence in the upper ranks of women’s tennis, has drawn international attention not only for her performances on the court but also for her relationship with Mitsotakis, a member of one of Greece’s most prominent political families. International media have in recent years highlighted the couple’s relatively low-profile approach, noting their efforts to keep personal matters largely out of the public spotlight despite heightened interest due to their respective profiles.
