Digital Work Card for Tourism Sector Comes into Effect

The initiative aims to tackle the nagging problem of undeclared or partially declared labor

With another banner year for Greece’s all-important tourism and travel industry in 2024, and with a new collective bargaining agreement providing a modest salary increase for hotel staff signed last month, it was the state’s turn last week to introduce mandatory digital “clocking in” for wage-earners in the sector, including workers in food and beverage establishments.

The initiative, tabled by the country’s labor and social insurance ministry, aims to tackle the nagging problem of undeclared or partially declared labor – the ubiquitous “off-the-books” employment.

As such, the digital work card comes into effect today, March 1, 2025, following a pilot implementation over the past five and a half months.
