Greek Merchant Fleet Up by 0.7% in June 2025

Based on the Hellenic Statistical Authority’s figures, this is the second consecutive rise in the Greek-owned commercial fleet

The size of Greece’s merchant fleet recorded a 0.7% increase in June 2025, compared to the same month last year, according to the country’s statistical authority, ELSTAT.

Based on the Hellenic Statistical Authority’s figures, this is the second consecutive rise in the Greek-owned commercial fleet, as it had also seen a 0.3% uptick from June 2023 to June 2024 for vessels over 100 registered tons.

However, the fleet’s total tonnage, measured in gross tonnage for vessels of 100 GT and above, fell 3.4% year-on-year in June 2025. A decline of 2.7% had also been recorded in June 2024 compared with the previous year.

The Greek merchant fleet is the largest in the world, with Greek shipowners controlling around 21% of the global fleet’s deadweight tonnage (dwt) and controlling a significant share of global trade in essential commodities like oil, gas, and bulk carriers.

The Greek fleet is crucial for global commerce, transporting staple goods and playing a vital role in the worldwide supply chain.
