MoU for 2nd Undersea Cable Between Greece, Italy

Greece's IPTO, Rome-based Terna sign MoU in Rome on sidelines of second high council of cooperation headed by respective countries' premiers

A second undersea power cable connecting Greece and Italy via the Adriatic Sea was one of the more prominent highlights of Monday’s second high council of cooperation, which was headed by Italian PM Giorgia Meloni and her visiting Greek counterpart, Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

A MoU signed in Rome is valued at 1.9 billion euros for the main partners, with Greece’s Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO or ADMIE) and Rome-based Terna S.p.A. signing for the respective sides.

The MoU, which was first reported by ot.gr hours earlier, includes the main conditions for the design and development of the new DC power connection, aimed to achieve decarbonization goals and further boost energy security and hubs in the Mediterranean.

The first undersea cable connecting the two countries began operation in 2002 and has a capacity of 500MW

The proposed project would entail a capacity of 1,000MW and extend over 240 kilometers of laid undersea cable and up to a depth of 1,000 meters, out of a total length of 300 kilometers. The cable is proposed to land within the municipality of Melendugno, while a new conversion station will be built in the Galatina municipality.
