Athens: Concerted Effort by Pro-Govt Media in Turkey to Revive, Escalate Aegean Incidents

Greek officials link renewed nationalist rhetoric in the neighboring country and Ankara's claims to 'pressure tactics' in the eastern Mediterranean

Renewed efforts by pro-government Turkish news outlets to revive past maritime incidents in the eastern Aegean are adding to concerns over a state-fueled nationalist upswing in the neighboring country, amid Ankara’s continued maritime claims, regional security and Erdogan-led Turkey’s increasingly chauvinistic rhetoric.

Officials in Athens on Friday said reports circulated this past week by certain Turkish outlets – which now thoroughly dominate the media sector in the neighboring country – concerning an alleged recent confrontation near the eastern Aegean islet of Farmakonisi were based on an incident that was reported months ago and which ended without escalation.

According to coast guard sources, the incident took place on Dec. 18, 2025, when a Turkish-registered fishing vessel was approached by a Greek coast guard patrol boat during routine monitoring and inspection activity in the specific maritime area. Officials said the encounter ended without confrontation or further incident, with the Turkish vessel departing roughly an hour later.

Despite that, several Turkish media outlets revisited the incident this week as a purported new Greek “provocation,” accompanied by inflammatory headlines and commentary portraying Greece as escalating tensions in the Aegean.

Greek officials and diplomats have in recent months increasingly accused Ankara of combining revisionist and belligerent rhetoric with coordinated media messaging aimed at shaping domestic nationalist sentiment and challenging Greece’s maritime positions. The issue has gained additional sensitivity following deliberations in the neighboring country surrounding legislation linked to the so-called “Blue Homeland” doctrine, which Athens views as an attempt to formalize contested claims in the eastern Mediterranean and Aegean.

International scrutiny of Turkey’s regional posture has also intensified over the past week, with foreign analysts and European officials expressing concern over Ankara’s increasingly confrontational rhetoric, military signaling and use of hybrid pressure tactics tied to illegal migration, maritime jurisdictions and regional influence.

Particular attention in Athens was drawn to the front page of the pro-government Turkish newspaper Türkiye, which published the headline “The Greeks are itching for it” on the anniversary of the May 29, 1453, fall of Constantinople.

Greek officials said such messaging reflects a broader strategy of maintaining hoped for pressure and sustaining nationalist sentiments at a time of domestic political and economic strain in Turkey.

Against that backdrop, Athens has emphasized the role of the coast guard and armed forces in maintaining operational readiness across sensitive areas of the Aegean, while insisting that Greece continues to exercise its sovereign rights in accordance with international law and seeks to avoid escalation despite repeated rhetorical provocations.
