Public sector physicians serving on 47 islands with fewer than 4,000 inhabitants will receive an additional 1,500 euros per month in net remuneration, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced in a social media on Thursday.
The criteria mean that physicians on 47 islands will benefit.
The extra cash, however, will not come from state coffers but rather is a grant by the Stelios (Haji-Ioannou) Charitable Foundation to Greece’s national health system, Mitsotakis thanking the founder of easyjet for the generous initiative.
The Greek PM emphasized that this is an initiative different from usual donations aimed at healthcare, which typically focus on infrastructure. This donation aims to support human resources, strengthening the presence of physicians on small islands during the winter period.
“For the first time, a private donor directly supports doctors staffing clinics on remote islands,” he noted, adding that the tax-free bonus will serve as a significant incentive. He also expressed gratitude to the charitable foundation.
