The transition of the Armed Forces into a new era, as outlined in the “Agenda 2030,” was one of the key points highlighted by Minister of National Defense Nikos Dendias during his speech at the opening of the Ministry of Defense pavilion at the 89th Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF).
“This is the transition into a new era served by ‘Agenda 2030’—a comprehensive transformation of the Armed Forces that upgrades our defense capabilities with a new deterrence doctrine and a new structure, as well as a framework of policies to support Armed Forces personnel and enhance their career development, with modern investment in innovation and the domestic defense industry. For the first time in Greece’s history, we have a clearly defined, nearly twenty-year armament program—a new approach, a new philosophy,” said National Defense Minister Dendias.
He went on to emphasize that the Ministry’s presence at this year’s TIF, which primarily has an economic focus, aims to explain how this transition also has a clear economic footprint.
“The first fundamental rule is the strict adherence to the principles of fiscal discipline and the fiscal framework. We must not forget that one of the two major problems that led Greece into bankruptcy in 2010 was the massive public debt. Therefore, medium-term planning of defense armaments secures the acquisition of the Armed Forces’ essential means within the available fiscal space. We are putting an end to past practices of buying whatever we found, at any cost, however we found it, whenever we found it,” he stated.
