EU and Gulf States Hold Foreign Ministers Video Meeting

Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis participates in EU-Gulf Cooperation Council talks amid Middle East tensions, stressing diplomacy, regional security, and adherence to international law while reaffirming Greece’s non-involvement in the conflict

Foreign ministers from the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries — Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates — convened yesterday via video conference to discuss the escalating conflict in the Middle East.

Greece was represented by Minister George Gerapetritis, who also chaired yesterday’s extraordinary session of the National Council for Foreign Policy. The discussions focused on regional security challenges and the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.

The meeting followed remarks by the Iranian president, who addressed Gulf countries, stating that Tehran had sought to prevent war through diplomacy but ultimately had no choice but to act militarily. He emphasized respect for regional sovereignty and called for collective efforts to ensure security.

Greece Advocates Diplomacy and International Law

The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through spokesperson Lana Zochiou, reiterated the country’s support for diplomatic solutions. Greece has repeatedly expressed concern over Iran’s nuclear program, stressing full compliance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency as essential for regional stability.

Minister Gerapetritis emphasized that Greece’s approach balances respect for international law with efforts to prevent further escalation. In recent discussions with European partners and regional counterparts, Greece aims to act as a reliable interlocutor, promoting restraint among all parties.

During talks with his U.S. counterpart at the White House, Gerapetritis also discussed issues relating to Iran, the Middle East, and the Eastern Mediterranean, noting that while disagreements exist, Greece’s stance is respected due to its adherence to international legal frameworks.

National Council Session Reaffirms Non-Involvement

At the extraordinary session of the National Council for Foreign Policy, representatives of Greek parliamentary parties reviewed the potential regional impacts of the crisis. Minister Gerapetritis reassured lawmakers that Greece will not become involved in the armed conflict, reinforcing the country’s commitment to diplomacy and international cooperation.
