Greece Joins Talks on EU-wide Migration Solidarity Mechanism

An informal October gathering will bring together six key member states to shape the Commission’s “solidarity pool” under the EU migration pact

EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner has invited ministers from Denmark, Germany, Greece, Spain, France, and Italy to an informal meeting on 1 October, aimed at advancing talks on a new EU-wide migration solidarity mechanism.

According to a document seen by Euractiv and confirmed by two EU officials, representatives from the six countries will take part in the closed-door discussions.

The initiative, described by Brunner as a way to build “a shared understanding of the guiding principles,” seeks to prepare the ground for the Commission’s decision later in October which will identify the countries that are facing the most intense migration pressures and define how other member states should contribute.

The so-called “solidarity pool”would be at the heart of the EU migration pact, requiring all countries to shoulder responsibility, either by relocating asylum seekers, paying into a joint fund, or providing alternative forms of support.
