Greece Ready for Any Scenario, Says FM

Amid rising global tensions and conflict in the Middle East, Greece emphasizes preparedness, strategic alliances and economic resilience while positioning itself as a stable and reliable international partner

Greece is prepared to respond to any potential geopolitical development, Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis said, highlighting the country’s readiness in an increasingly unstable global environment.

Speaking at a business forum in Athens, the minister described a world marked by rapid change and uncertainty, where long-standing international norms and structures have been significantly weakened. He pointed to ongoing conflicts, particularly in the Middle East, as evidence of a broader shift in the global security landscape.

According to Gerapetritis, traditional methods of anticipating geopolitical developments are no longer sufficient. Instead, governments must be ready to assess multiple scenarios and react swiftly. “In any case, we are prepared for any eventuality,” he said, stressing the importance of flexibility and preparedness in modern diplomacy.

He also warned of the potential economic consequences of prolonged instability, particularly in relation to key global trade routes. Disruptions in critical maritime passages, he noted, could have far-reaching effects on international markets, with impacts not yet fully reflected beyond the energy sector.

Despite global uncertainty, Greece has managed to maintain a stable and credible international presence, the minister said. He attributed this to a consistent foreign policy approach that combines realism with adherence to principles, allowing the country to strengthen its position within international alliances.

Over the past three years, Greece has focused on rebuilding its defense capabilities, restoring its international standing and stabilizing its economy following a prolonged financial crisis. This, Gerapetritis argued, has enabled the country to play a more active role in shaping policies within the European Union and beyond.

The minister also highlighted the importance of maintaining constructive relations with neighboring countries, noting that a period of reduced tensions has allowed Greece to regain lost ground and reinforce its strategic posture.

At the same time, Greece has expanded its network of international partnerships, deepening ties with key global and regional players. These alliances, he said, enhance the country’s geopolitical influence and create new opportunities for cooperation across sectors.

Economic diplomacy was another central theme of the minister’s remarks. He emphasized the growing importance of promoting national economic strengths abroad, noting that foreign investment and exports are increasingly tied to a country’s diplomatic credibility.

Gerapetritis outlined a multi-year strategy aimed at boosting international outreach and supporting domestic businesses in accessing global markets. The plan includes targeted initiatives across sectors such as energy, innovation, infrastructure and technology, as well as increased participation in international trade events.

He also underlined the value of political stability, describing it as a key advantage for Greece in a volatile European landscape. With many countries facing electoral uncertainty, he said, stable governance strengthens both economic performance and investor confidence.

Concluding his remarks, the minister called on the business community to take a more active and ambitious role in expanding Greece’s economic footprint abroad, stressing that coordinated efforts between the state and private sector are essential for sustained growth.
