Greek PM Attends Enthronement Ceremony at St. Catherine Monastery

The enthronement comes in the wake of encouraging signs of a permanent solution following ongoing talks between the delegations.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis attended the official enthronement ceremony of the new Archbishop of Sinai, Pharan and Raithu, Symeon, on Friday at the historic St. Catherine Monastery in the southern Sinai Peninsula in Egypt.

Mitsotakis stated that Greece would continue to safeguard and support the historic Orthodox Christian monastery, mentioning the very positive cooperation between Greece and Egypt to preserve the character of the historic symbol of Orthodoxy.

The enthronement comes in the wake of encouraging signs of a permanent solution following ongoing talks between the delegations from the two countries.

Addressing the newly enthroned archbishop, Mitsotakis clarified that Greece would continue to offer its support and stand by the monastic community of St. Catherine Monastery no matter what difficulties arose.

He also noted that despite the challenges it faced over the summer, it managed—with the help of the Sinai community—to emerge unscathed from the process.

On Saturday, the Greek leader will attend the inauguration of the emblematic Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Giza, while on Sunday, he will travel to Cyprus to attend a memorial service for the late president of Cyprus, Glafkos Clerides, at the Apostle Barnabas Cathedral in Nicosia.
