Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced a meeting with farmer representatives on Monday at 5 PM, signaling the government’s willingness to engage in dialogue amid ongoing agricultural protests.
Speaking at a parliamentary session of his New Democracy party, Mitsotakis highlighted the country’s economic progress, referencing the recent election of Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis to the Eurogroup presidency as evidence of Greece’s rise from financial crisis to international prominence.
“Where are those who once predicted failure and isolation for our country?” Mitsotakis asked, noting that Greece has moved from the European periphery to a leading position among developed economies, thanks to citizens’ sacrifices and a commitment to realistic policies over populism.
Support for Farmers
Addressing the agricultural sector, the Prime Minister emphasized that the government remains open to discussion. “The State is ready for dialogue. On Monday at 5 PM, I expect any delegation that wishes to attend,” he said, adding that his party has always supported farmers.
He also cited economic figures, noting that the primary sector earned €3.8 billion this year, up from €3.2 billion last year, and urged protesters to consider the broader impact of their actions on society.
Message to Party Members
Mitsotakis took the opportunity to address party lawmakers, emphasizing their role as political influencers rather than mere conduits for public sentiment. “Only when the party dominates politically can its members succeed. No one gains personally if the party does not prevail,” he stated.
He stressed the importance of unity within New Democracy, calling on members to engage citizens across different political backgrounds and to participate fully in upcoming national challenges. “In this effort, no one is expendable,” he said, framing the next elections as a test not merely of party politics but of the country’s stability and governance.
