Pro-Palestinian FB Post on Greek Embassy’s Page Generates Disciplinary Action

On Tuesday, foreign ministry spokeswoman Lana Zohiou said the content of the now deleted post 'does not represent our country'

A subsequently deleted post on the FB page of the Greek embassy in Luxembourg promoting a number of pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel rallies across Greece on Sunday generated a curt response by a foreign ministry spokeswoman on Tuesday.

When asked by a reporter about the controversial and unsanctioned post, spokeswoman Lana Zochiou said the content “does not represent our country”. She also said appropriate disciplinary and administrative procedures have been initiated against the embassy employee or employees responsible for the action.

“The administrative and disciplinary procedures provided under the law have already been initiated in order to clarify the circumstances under which the controversial post was made on the official social media account of the Greek Embassy in Luxembourg, and to assign the appropriate responsibilities. It should be emphasized that the content of this post does not represent the official position of our country,” was her entire statement.

Among others, the post stated that “…in more than 100 locations across the country, on the islands and on the mainland, demonstrations are currently taking place today to demand an end to the genocide in Gaza.”

The rallies/protests were called by leftist and far-left groups in the country, in cooperation with an association representing Palestinians. Although impressive in terms of the number of locations cited by the organizers in promotional materials, the actual turnout – judging from media coverage and social media photos – was unremarkable. The phrase “tourism destinations” was also cited in the poster posted on the FB page.
