Top EU Prosecutor Talks Greek Customs in Athens

The head of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), Laura Kovesi, is scheduled to hold a press conference later on Wednesday.

The head of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), Laura Kovesi, met with the Prosecutor of the Greek Council of State (CoS), Greece’s top administrative court, Konstantinos Tzavellas.

The meeting focused primarily on the increase in the number of positions for delegated European prosecutors staffing the national unit. According to reports, Laura Kovesi requested an expansion of these positions, a request she had already made earlier to the political leadership of the Ministry of Justice.

She also asked to be given the authority to renew the temporary transfer of certain Greek European prosecutors herself, rather than through a decision of the Supreme Judicial Council as required under Greek law.

Meanwhile, the top European prosecutor met with Minister of National Economy and Finance Kyriakos Pierrakakis earlier on Wednesday, where Greek customs was the focus of Ms. Kovesi’s scrutiny.

Sources indicate that she is expected to hold a press conference tomorrow at the Port of Piraeus customs office.

It is worth noting that millions of euros in cash were seized this summer from the office of a customs broker in Greece, at the Port of Piraeus, as authorities stepped up investigations into VAT fraud linked to Chinese organized crime, according to disclosures by the EU’s chief prosecutor cited by the Financial Times.
