US Ambassador Outlines Priorities in First TV Interview

In her first televised interview, the new US ambassador to Greece highlighted Washington’s strategic vision for the region, addressing geopolitical cooperation, defense ties and concerns over foreign influence in key ports.

The new US Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, presented her strategic vision for the bilateral relationship in her first televised interview, outlining Washington’s priorities and emphasizing Greece’s growing importance on the global stage.

Guilfoyle described her presence in Athens as a message of renewed US commitment, noting that cooperation between the two countries is entering “a new era.” She highlighted Greece’s role in wider geopolitical developments and emphasized the long-term strategic value Washington places on the partnership.

One of the most striking parts of her interview was her comment on the port of Piraeus, which is majority-controlled by the Chinese company COSCO. Guilfoyle called that development “unfortunate,” adding that the US sees “ways to offset” China’s influence through American-backed infrastructure in other Greek ports. She stressed that Greece’s economic instability at the time of the sale limited available options, but insisted that workable alternatives exist today.

Earlier in the day, Guilfoyle held her first official meeting at Greece’s Ministry of National Defence, where discussions focused on the future of US–Greece defense cooperation and the potential for further deepening the relationship.

She also visited Archbishop Ieronymos, underlining the importance of dialogue and peace between peoples. The meeting was described as warm, with both sides emphasizing shared values and the stabilizing role of faith and communication during turbulent times.

Through her first public statements, Guilfoyle sought to signal a practical, forward-looking agenda, combining strategic cooperation with a clear stance on regional influence and infrastructure security—setting the tone for her tenure in Athens.
