Greek authorities have imposed new civil protection measures on parts of Santorini as a precaution against earthquake and geodynamic risks, following a joint ministerial decision based on scientific recommendations.
The measures, announced by the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, will remain in effect until March 31, 2027, and focus on limiting access and managing movement in specific areas of the island’s volcanic complex.
Based on scientific assessment
The decision follows a unanimous recommendation from multiple scientific bodies, including committees monitoring seismic risk, volcanic activity, and broader hazard assessment. Officials said the restrictions aim to reduce exposure to potential risks linked to ongoing geodynamic phenomena.
Traffic controls at key port
At Athinios Port, Santorini’s main ferry gateway, new traffic regulations will be enforced to reduce congestion during arrivals and departures. Authorities aim to minimize the time vehicles and passengers remain in the area.
A designated emergency zone along the road network will remain clear at all times, with all vehicle parking strictly prohibited.
Access rules for popular areas
At the Old Port of Fira, including the cable car facilities and the footpath connecting it to the town, access and stay are generally permitted, except for a specifically restricted zone within the port area.
In the village of Armeni in Oia, visitors may continue to access the area both by sea and via the existing footpath.
Restrictions in Ammoudi and Thirassia
Stricter controls apply to the road leading to Ammoudi, a popular coastal area below Oia. Vehicle access is prohibited from the main junction, with limited exceptions: supply vehicles are allowed between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., and up to 15 private vehicles (with up to 20 seats) may enter on a rotating basis under municipal supervision.
Access to Ammoudi itself remains permitted, including by sea. However, the hiking trail from Ammoudi to Agios Nikolaos is closed, while the path connecting Ammoudi to Oia remains open.
On the nearby island of Thirassia, access and stay in the Korfos area are allowed both by land and sea.
Measures subject to change
Authorities emphasized that the measures may be revised or suspended if stronger geodynamic or weather-related phenomena occur, based on updated scientific assessments.
The full decision has been officially published, as officials continue to monitor conditions on the island closely.
