Two people were killed and two others injured in a chain-reaction crash on Greece’s Egnatia Odos highway on Saturday afternoon.
The first crash involved a passenger vehicle and a truck on the highway connecting Ioannina with the port of Igoumenitsa. No deaths were reported in that initial collision, which was likely caused by hail that made the road surface slippery.
A response crew from Egnatia Odos arrived at the scene to assist and manage traffic.
Shortly afterward, a second car traveling in the same direction struck one of the highway workers, who had come to assist. He was fatally injured and died shortly after. The car then struck the truck involved in the earlier crash. One of its passengers was also killed.
Emergency services arrived within 15 minutes. According to Greece’s National Emergency Aid Center (EKAB), three ambulances — including a mobile medical unit — were dispatched, staffed by six rescuers and a doctor.
Two injured people were taken to the General Hospital of Ioannina “G. Hatzikosta.”
The highway was closed in both directions following the incident.
Authorities are investigating the exact causes of the crashes.
