Touted as the “queen of contrasts and variety,” Ios is capturing the attention of international media as a must-visit destination for 2026, building on the new tourism narrative promoted by the Municipality of Ios.
The British Times ranks the island’s main town among Greece’s 25 most beautiful villages, noting that “the island’s capital consists of charming little houses reminiscent of sugar cubes. Winding streets climb up to the Church of Panagia Gremiotissa, with its iconic blue dome, offering breathtaking views of the sea and sunsets.”
Beyond its vibrant nightlife, Ios offers history enthusiasts a wealth of surprises, including the impressive concentric terraces of the ancient city of Skarkos dating back to 2300 BC and the Tomb of Homer.
Italian travel site Wom.Travel.it highlights contemporary trends in youth travel, explaining that young travelers increasingly favor destinations that combine entertainment with outdoor activities and cultural experiences. In this context, Ios ranks ninth among 14 “next-generation” European destinations—from Spain, Italy, Croatia, Greece, the Netherlands, Malta, and the UK—that blend diverse attractions and experiences.
In the same vein, French travel guide Petite Futé includes Ios in its annual listing of Greece’s best islands. “Our focus is no longer just enriching travel experiences but creating a destination that ensures quality of life for both visitors and residents,” emphasizes Ios Mayor Gkikas Gkikas.
In line with these efforts, and following close cooperation between the Municipality of Ios and the Ministry of Interior, funding has been secured for infrastructure restoration and upgrades amounting to 100,000, euros along with the inaugural inclusion of a 1,862,000 euros indoor sports hall project in the Public Investment Program.
