2026 is already a fact in Oceania, as the New Year is progressively being celebrated from east to west. The microscopic Republic Kiribati in the Pacific was the first territory to usher in the new year, along with Samoa.
As with every year, the new year was celebrated in splendor in Australia and New Zealand with massive fireworks shows again being disseminated around the world, especially those showing Syndey’s iconic harbor. Another stunning display took place in Auckland, New Zealand, the first major city to greet 2026.
This year’s celebrations “Down Under”, however, took placed under strict security measures, in the wake of this past month’s deadly terrorist attack at Bondi Beach, which claimed the life of 15 people during a Hanukkah commemoration.
Tens of thousands of people gathered at the Sydney Harbor gathered with candles and cell phone lights on to honor the victims of the terror attack during a minute’s silence.
Celebrations in Tokyo followed and around Japan.
