A 25-Year-Old’s Final Words Before Euthanasia

"I want to stop suffering" — The tragic story of the 25-year-old who will undergo euthanasia in Spain

The case of 25-year-old Noelia Castillo Ramos is shaking Spain. The young woman gave an exclusive interview to the show “Y Ahora Sonsoles” on Spanish television channel Antena 3, just one day before her death, explaining the reasons she is choosing assisted suicide.

“I finally did it. Let’s see if I can finally find peace, because I can no longer bear this family, the pain, everything that torments me from what I’ve been through. I don’t want to be an example for anyone.”

The life of the 25-year-old from Barcelona was marked by hardship from her very early years, as she was born into a “troubled family.” She spent most of her childhood in foster families, since her parents struggled with addiction. Despite the adversity, she managed to endure and move forward, until a tragic incident dramatically changed her life.

She was a victim of gang rape, a trauma that led her to fall from the fifth floor of a building. Although she did not lose her life, she suffered extremely serious injuries and as a result became paraplegic.

She had since lived in constant pain, and for this reason she requested to exercise her right to euthanasia, as recognized in Spain since 2021. In July 2024, a committee of experts from Catalonia approved her request, scheduling the euthanasia for August 2, of that year. Her father, however, appealed the decision and succeeded in suspending it.

The 25-year-old then appealed to both the Constitutional Court of Spain and the European Court of Human Rights. “I want to end my life with dignity,” she told the court in March 2025, and the ruling issued in February 2026 by the Spanish Constitutional Court ruled in her favor.

The last interview

A few days before her scheduled euthanasia, the 25-year-old contacted the show Ahora Sonsoles on Spain’s Antena 3 channel, where she spoke about her decision.

I’ve told them how I want it to happen. I want to die beautifully. I always believed I wanted to die beautifully. I will put on my most beautiful dress and do my makeup — it will be something simple,” said the 25-year-old, revealing that she had invited her family to say goodbye, but at the moment of her death she wants to be alone.

I want to leave now and stop suffering, full stop. No member of my family is in favor of euthanasia. And what about all the pain I have endured all these years? I have no desire to do anything: not to go out, not to eat. It is very hard for me to sleep and I have pain in my back and legs,” she explained about the situation she has been living with since 2022.

I finally did it. Let’s see if I can finally find peace, because I can no longer bear this family, the pain, everything that torments me from what I’ve been through. I don’t want to be an example for anyone, it’s simply my life, and that’s all,” she also said about her decision to end her life.

Specifically regarding her father, she said: “He watched me fall and could do nothing. But after everything he has done, I no longer feel sorry for him. He did not respect my decision and he never will. He wanted to put the house he bought in my name so he could continue receiving alimony. After that, he doesn’t want to put the house in my name, nor pay for the funeral, nor attend the euthanasia, nor the burial, and he says he doesn’t want to know anything more about me. That as far as he’s concerned, I’m already dead. I understand. He is a father and doesn’t want to lose a daughter, but he doesn’t listen to me. He never calls me, never writes to me. The only thing he does is bring me food. Why does he want me alive? To keep me in a hospital?

Her mother, although she did not agree with her daughter’s decision, chose to respect her wishes, stating on Y Ahora Sonsoles: “I pray to see if at the last moment she says: ‘I regret it.’ If she doesn’t want to live, there is nothing more I can do. I don’t feel comfortable with euthanasia, but I will always be by her side, to the extent she allows me.
