Cyprus President Calls for Talks on British Military Bases

President Nikos Christodoulides urges open dialogue with London on the future of UK bases in Cyprus, highlighting the welfare of over 10,000 residents living within the base areas

Cyprus is seeking a “frank and open discussion” with the United Kingdom regarding the future of British military bases on the island, President Nikos Christodoulides said in an interview with Bloomberg TV.

Speaking to journalist Oliver Crook, Christodoulides stressed that the issue of the UK bases “must be discussed,” emphasizing the need for a substantive dialogue with London.

He noted that the bases are a remnant of Cyprus’ colonial past and highlighted that more than 10,000 people currently live within these areas. “We have a responsibility for these people, for their safety and well-being,” the president said.

Referring to recent developments in the region, Christodoulides also mentioned that he has already spoken with the Cypriot Prime Minister regarding aspects of the crisis that were handled unsatisfactorily. “When this conflict concludes, we need to put everything on the table and jointly decide on the future of the bases,” he added.
