Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed confidence that his visit to the United States this week could yield progress on Turkey’s pursuit of advanced fighter aircraft.
Speaking to Fox News’ Special Report, Erdogan said he will raise the issue of acquiring F-35 jets during his upcoming meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Thursday.
When asked if he expects a green light for Turkey’s return to the F-35 program, Erdogan replied:
“At this stage, we will negotiate again on this issue. We expect that the United States will also do what is necessary – both regarding the F-35s and the matter of the F-16s, including their production and maintenance.”
The Turkish leader added that he hopes to leave New York with an agreement in hand, underscoring Ankara’s determination to secure advanced air capabilities through direct talks with Washington.
