Guilfoyle Hails Greece–Ukraine Gas Deal as ‘National Security’

The U.S. ambassador highlights the strategic value of a new LNG agreement between Greece and Ukraine, calling it a crucial step toward strengthening Europe’s energy independence from Russia

U.S. Ambassador Kimberly Gilfoyle praised the newly signed agreement between Greece and Ukraine on liquefied natural gas (LNG), describing energy security as a matter of “national security.” Her comment followed the signing of a letter of intent for Greece to supply natural gas to Ukraine, a deal reached in Athens and witnessed by Gilfoyle.

In a public statement, Gilfoyle emphasized the importance of the partnership, noting that the agreement provides essential alternatives to Russian energy. She highlighted that the deal builds on earlier arrangements aimed at bringing U.S. natural gas to European partners, reinforcing regional energy resilience.

The letter of intent was signed between ATLANTIC-SEE LNG TRADE—a joint venture involving the Greek energy provider DEPA and Aktor—and Ukraine’s state energy company Naftogaz. The cooperation is expected to support Ukraine as it continues to face severe pressure on its energy infrastructure due to ongoing attacks.

Gilfoyle called the signing “historic” and underlined Washington’s support for efforts that strengthen Europe’s energy diversification. “Energy security is national security. It’s that simple,” she wrote, adding that expanding access to non-Russian energy sources remains a strategic priority for the United States and its allies.
