Greece is relocating its embassy from Tehran to Baku, Azerbaijan, the Greek Foreign Ministry announced, in a move attributed to worsening security conditions in the Iranian capital that no longer allow for the safe operation of the diplomatic mission.
The decision was officially announced by ministry spokesperson Lana Zochiou and is being carried out on the initiative of the Greek government. Operational details of the relocation are not being made public for security reasons, and the process is currently underway.
Athens said there are no repatriation requests from Greek nationals in Iran, as the number of Greeks residing in the country is very small, consisting mainly of family members and staff of the diplomatic mission.
During a briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece, about 2,000 Greek citizens have so far been safely evacuated from the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and Israel.
Foreing Ministry spokesperson Lana Zochiou said the evacuation is a complex operation and the largest ever carried out by Greece, involving routes through multiple conflict zones.
