Greek PM on Venezuela: ‘The End of Maduro’s Regime Offers Hope’

Greek opposition parties scold Greek PM on his post on 'X'

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis commented on the overthrow of Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro by a U.S. military action, claiming the end of his regime offered new hope for the country, in a post on the social media platform “X”.

“Nicholas Maduro presided over a brutal and repressive dictatorship that brought about unimaginable suffering on the Venezuelan people. The end of his regime offers new hope for the country. This is not the time to comment on the legality of the recent actions,” he remarked.

Mitsotakis went on in a follow-up post to call for a “peaceful and speedy transition to a new inclusive government that enjoys full democratic legitimacy. Greece will coordinate with its European Union and UN Security Council partners on the matter.”

The PM’s line that it was not the time to focus on the legality of the U.S. actions prompted strong retorts from the opposition parties, which used sharp language, accusing him of adopting a problematic and “shameful” stance.

PASOK said the Greek PM had chosen to fully comply with the “law of the jungle” and abandon every sense of international legality.

SYRIZA dubbed the post “unthinkable”, adding that this kind of “reasoning” fed and legitimized Erdogan’s aggression against Greece.

The Greek communist party (KKE) called the PM’s post “despicable” and that it was shameful for the Greek people”.
