Israeli President Herzog to Visit Cyprus on September 10

Isaac Herzog is expected to meet President Nikos Christodoulides for talks on strengthening bilateral ties, as Cyprus, Greece and Israel deepen strategic cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean

Israeli President Isaac Herzog will visit Cyprus on September 10 for a one-day trip focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and further deepening relations between the two countries, his office announced.

The visit is expected to take place at the invitation of Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, who will receive Herzog at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia.

The two leaders will hold a private meeting before chairing expanded talks attended by delegations from both countries.

Eastern Mediterranean cooperation

Although the Israeli president’s office has not listed Turkey as an official topic on the agenda, Herzog’s visit comes as geopolitical tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean intensify and strategic cooperation among Israel, Cyprus and Greece continues to expand.

The three countries have broadened their cooperation in recent years in areas including defense, energy and regional security, developments that are closely watched by Turkey, according to i24NEWS.

Cyprus and regional defense

Tensions have increased following Cyprus’ decision to acquire the Israeli-made Barak MX air defense system.

Turkey has warned that deployment of the system could further increase regional tensions, while Nicosia has argued that strengthening its defense capabilities is a necessary response to growing regional threats.

Israel has also deepened its defense cooperation with Greece.

The two countries have signed a €3 billion agreement to establish a multilayered Greek air and missile defense system.

The development forms part of the broader relationship between Greece and Israel and the wider security dynamics in the Eastern Mediterranean, where the regional role of Turkey remains closely monitored by Athens, Nicosia and Jerusalem.

Second Herzog-Christodoulides meeting

Herzog’s upcoming visit follows his close cooperation with Christodoulides.

The Cypriot president visited Israel in December 2025, where he met Herzog at the Presidential Residence in Jerusalem.
