Italian Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirmed that Italy intends to support a UN declaration of Palestinian statehood during the United Nations General Assembly to be held on September 22, 2025, in New York.
Antonio Tajani spoke at a press conference with Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin after their visit to Gemelli Hospital in Rome, Italy, on September 1, 2025.
“On September 22, in New York, we will firmly support the declaration within the framework of the United Nations, with the goal of creating a Palestinian state and ending the conflicts,” Tajani said.
Until now, the Italian government had consistently expressed support for a two-state solution but stressed that recognition of a Palestinian state at this time could have negative consequences.
According to the Italian press, the draft declaration that will serve as the basis for discussion at the UN clearly states that Hamas must cease exercising power in the Gaza Strip and hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority, with the assistance and support of the international community, as part of the broader goal of establishing an independent and sovereign Palestinian state.
