Libyan Parliament President to Visit Athens on Friday

Libyan parliament leader Aguila Saleh Issa will make his first official visit to Greece, meeting Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis as Athens reiterates its opposition to the Turkey–Libya maritime agreement

Libya’s Speaker of Parliament, Aguila Saleh Issa, is scheduled to arrive in Athens on Friday for his first official visit to Greece, where he will meet with Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis.

According to Greek Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lana Zochiou, the minister will use the meeting to restate Greece’s long-standing position that the Turkey–Libya maritime memorandum is “illegal and invalid.” The agreement, signed several years ago, has been repeatedly rejected by Athens, which argues that it violates international maritime law.

The visit also comes as Greece prepares a business mission to Libya in January 2026, part of a broader effort to strengthen bilateral cooperation. The planned mission aims to support economic activity and expand institutional ties between the two countries, highlighting a renewed focus on rebuilding relations with Libya amid shifting political dynamics in the region.
