Operational Milestone for Greek-Operated Patriot AA Battery in Saudi Arabia

The Greek army unit, which has been deployed with the US-made anti-aircraft and anti-missile system since 2021, is credited with intercepting two Iranian ballistic missiles on Thursday

Reports on Thursday that a US-made Patriot missile battery deployed by the Greek army and manned by Greek personnel in Saudi Arabia intercepted two Iranian ballistic missiles generated heightened media and social media attention in the east Mediterranean country.

The incident marks an operational milestone for the small Greek military contingent deployed in the sensitive Mideast region since 2021.

The interception took place within the unit’s area of responsibility in southwest Saudi Arabia, according to reports.

Asked about the incident on Thursday, Greek government spokesperson and Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister Pavlos Marinakis described the action as strictly defensive and as a deterrent, emphasizing that it does not constitute escalation or any participation in offensive operations against Iran.

The government spokesperson reiterated statements by Defense Minister Nikos Dendias, who emphasized that the Greek-operated battery demonstrates the combat readiness of the country’s armed forces and the experience gained, adding that the assigned military personnel are indirectly—but clearly—helping to protect the standard of living of Greek and European citizens.

The specific battery forms part of the international “Integrated Air Missile Defense (IAMD) Concept,” aimed at strengthening Saudi Arabia’s air defense. Operating under the Greek Force Saudi Arabia (ELDYSA) unit, its primary mission is to provide anti-aircraft and anti-missile protection for critical infrastructure, including petrochemical facilities belonging to the state-owned company Saudi ARAMCO, considered as the largest in the world.

The deployment, which began in 2021, has been extended following a request from Saudi authorities, with Greek-owned Patriot systems expected to remain in the country at least until the end of the year.

The broader framework for this cooperation was formalized in July 2024, when Parliament ratified a military cooperation agreement between Greece and Saudi Arabia, updating and reinforcing defense ties between the two countries.
