Suspected Hamas Member Detained in Cyprus Over Weapons Plot

A Lebanese-born suspect wanted by German prosecutors was arrested at Larnaca airport, accused of procuring ammunition linked to planned attacks on Israeli or Jewish targets in Germany and across Europe

Authorities in Cyprus have detained a suspected member of Hamas who is wanted in Germany for allegedly helping procure weapons and ammunition intended for attacks on Israeli or Jewish facilities, German federal prosecutors said on Tuesday.

The Lebanese-born suspect, identified as Kamel M. under German privacy rules, was arrested at Larnaca International Airport on March 6 after arriving from Lebanon.

Allegations of Weapons Procurement

According to prosecutors, the suspect is wanted in connection with the transport of 300 rounds of live ammunition. Authorities did not specify where the ammunition originated or its intended destination.

Prosecutors said the operation was allegedly part of preparations for potential deadly attacks targeting Israeli or Jewish institutions in Germany and elsewhere in Europe.

Investigation and Possible Extradition

Police also searched the suspect’s apartment in Berlin as part of the investigation.

German prosecutors said that once Kamel M. is extradited to Germany, a judge will determine whether he should be held in pre-trial detention.
