A fatal collision between a freight train and a bus in Russia’s Leningrad region has left one person dead and eleven others injured, according to the regional railway authority.
The incident occurred on Monday in northwestern Russia. Authorities stated that the bus driver entered a railway crossing as a freight train was approaching. Despite the train driver applying the brakes, the short distance made it impossible to avoid the crash.
Initial reports indicate that the bus was operating a regular service route, though Russia’s state news agency RIA, citing the local prosecutor’s office, reported that it may have been a tourist bus.
“According to preliminary information, 12 passengers on the bus were injured and one of them later died from their injuries,” the regional railway administration announced via Telegram.
