U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday described Cuba as being in “deep trouble” on a humanitarian level, saying the island nation is running low on energy and money.
Speaking at a news conference in Doral, Florida, Trump suggested that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was handling the situation and hinted at a possible “friendly takeover,” while acknowledging it “may not be a friendly takeover.”
No Confirmation from Havana
The Cuban government has not confirmed any formal high-level negotiations with the United States but has also not fully dismissed reports that U.S. officials may be in informal discussions with Raul Guillermo Rodriguez Castro, grandson of former President Raul Castro.
Cuba’s leadership continues to face pressure amid economic hardships and longstanding U.S.-Cuba tensions, while Cuban exiles in Miami have historically sought regime change or the collapse of the government established by revolutionary leader Fidel Castro.
