U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed that he will meet with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in South Korea in “about two weeks,” on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
Trump revealed the plan in an interview with Fox News, set to air on Sunday. “We will meet in about two weeks … in South Korea, with President Xi,” he said, according to excerpts from Fox Sunday Morning Futures.
The U.S. president is scheduled to travel to South Korea on October 29 for a two-day visit, with the summit running through November 1.
Trump had threatened last week to cancel the meeting, but his treasury secretary said on Wednesday he expected it to go ahead.
The visit comes amid heightened trade tensions between Washington and Beijing, centered primarily on tariffs. A fragile truce has been under negotiation, but Trump has warned he could impose additional 100% tariffs on Chinese goods entering the U.S., expressing frustration over China’s tightening of export controls on rare earth elements.
