Two Police Officers Killed in Armed Attack Near Izmir

A 16-year-old suspect was arrested after an armed assault on a police station in western Turkey that left two officers dead and two others injured, one critically

Two police officers were killed and two others injured in an armed attack on a police station near Izmir, western Turkey, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced on Monday. One of the injured officers remains in critical condition.

Authorities said the suspected gunman, just 16 years old, has been taken into custody.

Television footage showed security forces cordoning off the area around the station, while video shared by Turkish media appeared to capture a young man carrying a shotgun and fleeing the scene.

Izmir mayor Cemil Tugay condemned what he called a “heinous attack” against the Salih Isgören police station in Balçova district, writing on X (formerly Twitter).

Turkey has seen previous assaults on security forces carried out by Kurdish militants, Islamist groups, and far-left organizations.
