Ukrainian Prime Minister Resigns as Part of Major Reshuffle

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Monday nominated First Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko to replace Shmyhal.

The Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, submitted a letter of resignation on Monday as part of the country’s largest wartime governmental reshuffle expected this week.

First Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko was nominated as Shmyhal’s replacement by President Volodymyr Zelensky. Svyrydenko, who is also the Minister of Economy, is a close and long-standing ally of Zelensky.

Shmyhal, who has been the country’s prime minister since 2020, is expected to be appointed as Ukraine’s new defense minister, the Ukrainian President stated on Monday.

The shakeup, the biggest since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, comes as the Russian forces continue their grinding advance in Ukraine’s east, and prospects for any fast ceasefire deal look dim.
