US to Impose 100% Tariff on Foreign-Made Movies

President Donald Trump announced a sweeping 100% tariff on all films produced outside the United States, a move that rattled the entertainment industry and hit streaming giants’ shares

The United States will impose a 100% tariff on all movies made abroad, President Donald Trump said on Monday in a post on Truth Social.

“Our movie making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing ‘candy from a baby’,” Trump said.

The announcement marks one of Trump’s most aggressive moves yet to protect the domestic film industry, which he has long accused of losing ground to international competitors.

Trump had first floated the idea of tariffs on foreign films in May but had offered few details, leaving Hollywood executives uncertain about how such a policy would work in practice.

Market reaction

Shares of Netflix fell 1.4% in premarket trading following the announcement, while Warner Bros Discovery slipped 0.6%. Industry analysts said the tariffs could disrupt international distribution chains and raise costs for streaming platforms heavily reliant on global content.

The new measure is expected to spark pushback from U.S. allies whose film industries contribute significantly to global box office revenues.
