Zelensky Says Ukraine will not Cede Land Ahead of Trump-Putin Meeting

Zelensky made the statement ahead of meeting planned between Putin and Trump in Alaska on August 15

U.S. President Donald Trump will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15 to discuss ending the war in Ukraine, with Trump suggesting a potential land-swap deal, according to Reuters.

While Trump said the parties were “close” to a ceasefire, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected any settlement that involved giving up territory, calling such moves “unworkable.”

The Kremlin confirmed the summit, saying it would focus on a long-term resolution, though officials acknowledged the talks would be challenging. B

loomberg previously reported on a possible agreement securing Russia’s occupation of seized Ukrainian land, but both Kyiv and U.S. officials have downplayed the report.

The proposed deal would reportedly freeze battle lines in parts of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, but ceding roughly a fifth of Ukraine’s territory remains a political red line for Zelenskiy.

The Alaska summit comes as Trump escalates economic pressure on Moscow, including new tariffs targeting Russian oil trade, and follows signals from Poland’s prime minister that a temporary pause in fighting may be within reach.
