Emergency Bulletin Upgraded Amid Storm Risk in Ionian and Western Greece

Heavy rains and storms are expected through Sunday evening in western Greece, with Civil Protection urging residents to take precautionary measures

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) updated its Emergency Weather Bulletin on Sunday, September 28, upgrading it to a full Emergency Bulletin of Dangerous Weather Phenomena following the latest forecast data.

According to meteorologists, strong rains and thunderstorms are expected to persist through late Sunday evening across Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Ithaca, Aetolia-Acarnania, Achaia, and Ilia, while at intervals, severe conditions may also affect Lefkada, Messinia, Arta, and Preveza.

A public alert was sent via the 112 emergency number, urging citizens in affected areas to exercise extreme caution when traveling or engaging in outdoor activities. Forecasts indicate that severe weather will continue from late Saturday night (September 27) through Sunday evening, with the Ionian islands and western mainland expected to bear the brunt.

Authorities are on high alert. The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has informed all relevant state agencies, regional authorities, and municipalities to be on standby to respond quickly to any emergencies. The Fire Service has also activated its operational flood-response plan, placing regional units in western Greece under heightened readiness, with the capacity to escalate further if required.

How the weather phenomena will develop through the hours

Guidelines for Citizens

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has issued a set of precautionary measures for residents in areas affected by the severe weather:

  • Secure objects that could be swept away by strong winds or rain, posing risks of damage or injury.
  • Ensure gutters and drains are clear to prevent flooding.
  • Avoid crossing streams, rivers, or flooded roads—whether on foot or by vehicle—during and after heavy rainfall.
  • Refrain from outdoor work and sea-related activities during storms due to the risk of lightning strikes.
  • Take cover immediately during hailstorms, preferably indoors or inside a vehicle.
  • Stay away from large trees, hanging signs, and balconies where unsecured objects could fall.
  • Follow instructions from local authorities, including police and traffic services.

During Lightning Activity

  • Indoors: Disconnect electrical appliances and avoid using landline phones or touching plumbing.
  • In vehicles: Stop safely away from trees, keep windows closed, and avoid touching metal surfaces.
  • Outdoors: Seek shelter in a building or car, crouch low to the ground if caught in the open, and stay away from water, metal objects, and tall isolated trees.

The civil protection authorities stress that awareness and preventive action are critical in reducing the risks from flash floods, strong storms, and lightning strikes expected over the coming hours.
