Emergency Measures in Place as Heatwave Scorches Greece

This extreme heat is expected to continue through the week, with only minor variations in temperature. Stay informed and prioritize health and safety

Greece continues to experience an intense heatwave, with exceptionally high temperatures and limited wind activity. The forecast for Monday indicates persistently hot and dry conditions across the country, especially in mainland regions and the eastern island areas.

General Conditions

Skies will remain mostly clear throughout the country, with only isolated clouds expected over mountainous inland areas during the afternoon. In those regions, there is a possibility of brief, localized showers, particularly in northwestern parts of the mainland.

Winds will be generally light and variable. In the western regions, winds will come from the west-northwest at 3 to 5 Beaufort during the warmer hours of the day. Eastern areas, including much of the Aegean, will experience similar wind conditions, while the northern Aegean will see northerly to northeasterly winds at 3 to 5 Beaufort.

Temperature Highlights

The heatwave will remain in full effect, with temperatures reaching dangerous levels. Maximum temperatures are expected to range as follows:

  • Mainland Greece:
Most areas will see highs between 39°C and 41°C, particularly in Central Macedonia, Thessaly, and Central Greece. Minimum temperatures will range from 22°C to 25°C, slightly cooler in western and mountainous areas.
  • Ionian Islands, Western Greece:
Temperatures will climb to 38°C to 40°C inland and 35°C to 37°C along coastal and island areas. Conditions will remain dry with only local cloud buildup inland in the afternoon.
  • Eastern Island Regions (Aegean, Dodecanese):
Very warm, with highs between 36°C and 38°C, reaching 38°C locally in the eastern Aegean and Dodecanese islands.
  • Cyclades and Crete:
Sunny conditions with high temperatures ranging from 33°C to 36°C, particularly in southern Crete.
  • Attica (Athens area):
Clear skies with persistent heat. Temperatures will range from 25°C in the early morning to 38°C–39°C during peak hours. Light variable winds, occasionally turning southerly in the afternoon.
  • Thessaloniki and Central Macedonia:
Clear and hot. Highs of 37°C to 41°C, especially in inland parts of Central Macedonia. Afternoon clouds may appear over nearby hills.

Heat Stress Advisory

Due to the ongoing extreme heat, the Greek government has issued updated emergency advisories:

  • Outdoor work restrictions are in place from 12:00 to 17:00 in several high-risk regions, including Central Macedonia, the Ionian Islands, Western Greece, Thessaly, Messinia, Samos, and eastern Rhodes. This applies to all outdoor manual labor, including construction, deliveries, and related activities.
  • Employers are urged to implement remote working for employees in high-risk groups or those exposed to outdoor heat where feasible.
  • Special working hour flexibility is allowed without prior digital registration for businesses in affected areas.

Visitors should take necessary precautions against heat stress—stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during midday, and use air-conditioned spaces when possible.

This extreme heat is expected to continue through the week, with only minor variations in temperature. Stay informed and prioritize health and safety.
