The nominations for the 77th Emmy Awards have officially been announced, setting the stage for the biggest night in television, which will take place on September 14, 2025. Widely regarded as the television equivalent of the Oscars, the Emmys recognize the best programming across broadcast, cable, and streaming platforms.
This year, Severance, the critically acclaimed Apple TV psychological thriller, leads the pack with an impressive 27 nominations. Following closely are The Penguin with 24 nominations, The Studio and The White Lotus with 23 each, and The Last of Us with 16. Other top contenders include Star Wars: Andor and Hacks (14 nominations each), as well as Adolescence, The Bear, and The Pitt, each securing 13 nominations.
Breakthroughs and Milestones
Among the most talked-about surprises is the nomination of 15-year-old Owen Cooper for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role in Netflix’s Adolescence. If he wins, the British actor will become the youngest male Emmy winner for a performance category in history.
At the other end of the age spectrum, Kathy Bates has become the oldest nominee for Best Actress in a Drama Series at age 77, for her performance in the legal drama Matlock (CBS).
In a notable first, legendary filmmakers Martin Scorsese and Ron Howard earned their debut Emmy acting nominations for guest appearances in the Hollywood satire The Studio (Apple TV). They are joined in the Best Guest Actor in a Comedy Series category by Dave Franco, Bryan Cranston, Anthony Mackie, and Jon Bernthal (The Bear).
The Studio Makes Emmy History
The Studio also received a nomination for Best Comedy Series and tied a previous record for most comedy nominations in a single year, matching The Bear’s 2024 total. Performers from the series nominated include Seth Rogen, Ike Barinholtz, Kathryn Hahn, and Catherine O’Hara.
It will compete in the Best Comedy Series category against Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Hacks, Nobody Wants This, Only Murders in the Building, Shrinking, and What We Do in the Shadows.
