Henrik Ibsen’s masterpiece A Doll’s House comes to the Beckett Stage, in Athens, this Dec., presented by the Loxodox ensemble and directed by Alkinoos Doris. Opening on Dec. 25, the production revisits one of modern theatre’s foundational works with a fresh, incisive gaze.
Set against the backdrop of the Christmas holidays, the play unfolds within the confines of a middle-class Northern European home—an intimate arena where Ibsen places his magnifying glass. The characters of A Doll’s House carry the scars etched by life, time, and the weight of daily routine.

Arrivals, future plans, and secrets long buried disrupt the festive atmosphere of the Helmer household, transforming confidence into uncertainty as the protagonists confront forces beyond their control. Invisible currents sweep the “human doll” into an uncharted expanse, even as each struggles to assert a coherent sense of self.
On the threshold of the 20th century—when the question of women’s emancipation was beginning to shift from theory to social reality—Ibsen crafted characters undertaking a journey toward discovering their true identities.
Widely regarded as the birth of realistic drama, A Doll’s House remains a milestone of modern theatre, a work through which Ibsen explores universal themes: equality, the belief in change, love, and the pursuit of knowledge.
