To Live or To Question Life: Hamlet in a Modern, Darkly Ironic Interpretation

Megaron Athens Concert Hall will host a screening of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, as performed at the Lyttelton Theatre in London, on Thursday, February 19 at 20:00.

Francesca Mills and Hiran Abeysereka, as Ophelia and Hamlet

“Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.” Trapped between duty and doubt, surrounded by a world of power, privilege, and moral decay, the young Prince Hamlet (Hiran Abeysekera) poses the most famous existential question in world drama.
The production is a tasteful, sharp adaptation with dark humor, directed by Deputy Artistic Director of the National Theatre Robert Hastie. With a modern perspective and intense psychological precision, he highlights the contradictions within Hamlet as a hero of constant questioning, trapped in a world that is morally collapsing.

In the title role, the Olivier Award-winning Hiran Abeysekera delivers a bold and multi-layered performance, embodying the tragic prince with intensity, sensitivity, and an elusive inner life, making this interpretation of Hamlet deeply contemporary.

This production is presented in collaboration with the British Council and the British Embassy of Athens.

Geoffrey Streatfeild as Polonius.
