Greece Honors Academy of Athens with Centenary Commemorative Stamp

The Greek Postal Service releases commemorative stamps celebrating 100 years of the Academy of Athens and its cultural legacy.

The Greek Postal Service (ELTA) unveiled a new stamp series celebrating the 100th anniversary since the founding of the Academy of Athens, paying tribute to the institution’s enduring contribution to scientific research, arts, and culture.

The four stamps feature scenes from the painted decorations of the Academy’s grand conference hall, depicting mythological heroes, as well as views of the building’s exterior dominated by the giant statue of Athena, the goddess of wisdom, arts, and sciences.

Founded in 1926 and inspired by the historic Academy of Plato, the Academy of Athens is Greece’s highest research institution. It operates under the supervision of the Education Ministry and remains a major landmark in the heart of the Greek capital.

In addition to the stamps, the commemorative series includes a first day of issue cover and a special collector’s pack, available at ELTA stores and online at philotelismos.gr.

Late last year, the state-owned Greek Postal Service announced plans to close 204 of its branches across Greece as part of a controversial downsizing plan.
