The occasion was the establishment of the Miltiadis Marinakis Professorship for Modern Greek Language and Culture by the Board of Trustees of Ohio State University.
The hosts of the discussion, Nikolas and Olga Bornozis, emphasized the decisive importance of preserving and spreading cultural and linguistic heritage, as well as the financial support provided by Mr. Evangelos Marinakis in memory of his father.
Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, in his address, spoke of a joyful event: “Our celebration for the establishment of the Miltiadis Marinakis Professorship is a reason for joy that goes beyond the local level for Ohio State University,” said Archbishop Elpidophoros.
The Ambassador of Greece, Alexandra Papadopoulou, greeted the event, highlighting the role of the Greek language as a foundation of life for Greeks of the Diaspora.
“For those who emigrated, Greek history and culture offer a home away from their homeland — something that reminds them who they are and serves as a foundation for self-awareness,” added the Greek ambassador.
In his speech, Mr. Evangelos Marinakis referred to the reasons that led him to contribute to this important endeavor, expressing his wish that young people from all over the world should have access to the modern Greek language and culture.
“In this way, we safeguard, for future generations of students at Ohio State University, the cultural identity of our country forever — a fundamental element in shaping who we are,” emphasized Mr. Marinakis, noting that he is “very proud and satisfied” to be part of this great initiative.
The importance of Modern Greek Studies programs at American universities was analyzed by distinguished scholar and head of the Chair, Dr. Georgios Anagnostou.
The digital discussion was attended by prominent figures from the academic and business world of the Greek-American community.
