Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis met with the new U.S. Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, on Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 4. The meeting underscored what both sides described as the “excellent” state of Greek-American relations — the best in their history, according to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lana Zochiou.
“The talks focused on the strategic partnership between Greece and the United States and preparations for the sixth round of the Greece–U.S. Strategic Dialogue, which will be held in Athens,” Zochiou said. The upcoming session is expected to bring U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to the Greek capital.
In light of the regional energy conference taking place in Athens this week, Zochiou highlighted the growing geopolitical importance of energy, stressing that “energy and national security are inextricably linked.” She added that Greece continues to advance its role in regional energy and security developments.
Commenting on the recent agreement between Turkey and the United Kingdom for the sale of 20 Eurofighter jets, Zochiou clarified that “Greece does not dictate procurement policies to third countries.” However, she confirmed that Minister Gerapetritis raised the issue with his British counterpart, noting, “We expect our allies to share our concerns.”
Zochiou also reiterated Greece’s initiative to inform the four coastal states of the Eastern Mediterranean about the creation of a new “5+5” cooperation framework. The proposal, she said, remains in an early stage: “The next steps require careful planning and a gradual build-up of trust.”
The meeting reflected the steady momentum of Greece’s foreign policy and its pivotal role in promoting stability and energy cooperation across the Eastern Mediterranean.
