Dendias in London Discusses Key Defense and Security Issues

Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias met his UK counterpart to strengthen defense ties, discuss Eastern Mediterranean security, and outline Greece’s major defense modernization programs under the “Agenda 2030.”

Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias visited London for high-level talks with his British counterpart, John Healey, focusing on regional security, defense cooperation, and Greece’s ambitious defense modernization plans.

In a statement, Dendias highlighted discussions on stability and security challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as the broader situations in Iran, the Middle East, Lebanon, and Ukraine.

Strengthening Defense Collaboration

The ministers also discussed enhancing bilateral military cooperation, particularly in innovation and the use of unmanned systems, as part of Greece’s long-term strategic framework, the “Agenda 2030.”

Dendias outlined that several major defense programs are being submitted for parliamentary review, emphasizing modernization across air, land, and naval forces. Key initiatives include:

  • Multi-layered air defense systems under the “Achilles Shield” program to counter aircraft, drones, missiles, and ballistic threats. Greek companies will contribute at least 25% of production.
  • Integration of F-35 aircraft at Andravida Air Base, marking a new era for the Hellenic Air Force.
  • Upgrading approximately 40 F-16 Block 50 jets to Viper standard, expanding Greece’s fleet to over 100 Viper aircraft.
  • Modernization of MEKO frigates, with participation from domestic shipyards.
  • Enhanced “Follow On Support” contracts for military aircraft, including transport planes like the C-27, now treated as transparent defense programs with parliamentary oversight.

Dendias stressed that these programs reflect Greece’s proactive assessment of emerging security challenges and aim to equip the Hellenic Armed Forces to operate at unprecedented levels of strength and readiness.

“The implementation of these programs will bring our Armed Forces into a new era,” Dendias said. “The security and protection of Greek society are now more essential than ever.”
