Great Sea Interconnector: Israel Again Backs Troubled Project

The ambitious project to connect Israel with Greece, via Cyprus, with an undersea power cable was up for discussion between the relevant Israeli and Cypriot ministers this week

The Israeli side is apparently trying to revive momentum for the troubled Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project, less than two weeks after the Cypriot government openly disputed the economic viability of the proposed power cable connecting Israel with Cyprus and then on to mainland Greece.

Beyond Nicosia’s apparent “cold feet”, European prosecutors also commenced a probed into the previous vehicle tasked with essentially the same project, the Euroasia Interconnector.

Nevertheless, a more “positive vibe” emerged during a working meeting in Israel between the country’s energy and infrastructure minister, Eli Cohen, with his Cypriot counterpart, Giorgos Papanastasiou.

At practically every turn, the Israeli side has expressed its support for the ambitious project and the possibility of finding investment capital.

Among others, after the meeting, Cohen took to his X account to post a statement whereby Israel and Cyprus continue to promote the power connection stretching over much of the east Mediterranean.
