Greece Revokes Asylum Status Over Security Concerns

The Greek minister made clear that the Greek state will not tolerate granting protection to individuals who break the law, underscoring that “we will not accept any supporter of Hamas or anyone engaged in illegal activity being protected.”

Greece’s Asylum Service has revoked the international protection status of a Palestinian national residing in the country, citing concerns over public security.

According to Migration and Asylum Minister Thanos Plevris, authorities determined that the individual had “taken part in celebrations following the Hamas massacre” and, based on the evidence collected, posed a threat to public safety.

In a post on X, Plevris noted that since July there has been a standing directive to re-examine all asylum cases in light of new information, particularly where there are indications that could justify lifting protection status. Such indications include arrests or other unlawful conduct.

The minister stressed that international protection is not permanent and that regular reviews are necessary to ensure compliance with the law.

Concluding his statement, Plevris made clear that the Greek state will not tolerate granting protection to individuals who break the law, underscoring that “we will not accept any supporter of Hamas or anyone engaged in illegal activity being protected.”
